Background:
Alex Bellamy's research focuses on the normative aspects of the use of force, in particular the ethics and laws of war, peacekeeping, humanitarian intervention and security sector reform. In 2004, he was awarded the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia award for early career research. His work on the ethics and laws of war includes a single-authored book (Just Wars, Polity, 2006) and a series of articles on topics such as 'supreme emergencies, the ethics of torture (both in International Affairs), the war in Iraq (Journal of Peace Research) and the doctrine of 'dirty hands' (forthcoming in the British Journal of Politics and International Relations). Bellamy's work on torture was cited approvingly in the British House of Commons in early 2006. In this area, he is currently writing a book on the ethics of terrorism under contract with Oxford University Press. In the field of peacekeeping, he has co-authored one of the field's leading books (Understanding Peacekeeping, Polity 2004), which is already in its third reprint and is scheduled for a second edition. Bellamy has also co-authored work on peacekeeping in International Security and co-edited a special issue of the journal International Peacekeeping. Bellamy's work on humanitarian intervention had its genesis in a 2002 book on the Kosovo intervention (Kosovo and International Society, Palgrave) and has been published in several leading journals including Review of International Studies, Ethics and International Affairs (twice) and Security Dialogue. Finally, building on earlier work on civil-military relations in the Balkans, Bellamy worked with Mark Beeson on a project on security sector reform in Southeast Asia.
