About the Peace & Conflict Resolution Program
Recent international crises and those emerging in our own Asia-Pacific region highlight the need for greater understanding of the political, economic and social factors that affect security and stability. The tragic human costs of conflict are exemplified most recently by the renewed threat of insurgency and terrorism or by the humanitarian crises in Iraq, Afghanistan, central Africa and the Balkans. There is no doubt that the world needs greater expertise in alleviating tensions and more effective strategies for promoting peace and stability. Particularly important is the ability to address conflicts before they begin to escalate.
Our postgraduate programs in Peace and Conflict Resolution are designed to provide students with the skills necessary to make a significant contribution to such attempts at reducing or preventing conflict. We offer a comprehensive education, providing students with the necessary background in such domains as conflict resolution, mediation, peacebuilding, peacekeeping and human rights work. In doing so we aim not only to provide students with exciting professional opportunities, but also to make a contribution towards a more stable and peaceful future.
Our programs are designed to address these needs. We aim to equip students with the knowledge and practical skills that they need to engage in conflict resolution, peacekeeping and peacebuilding in the contemporary global context.
The School offers four specialised coursework degrees concerned with peace and conflict as part of our broader postgraduate International Studies program. These degrees are:
- Advanced Master of International Studies (Peace and Conflict Studies)
- Master of International Studies (Peace and Conflict Studies)
- Graduate Diploma in International Studies (Peace and Conflict Studies)
- Graduate Certificate in International Studies (Peace and Conflict Studies)
The degrees are tailored for students who seek employment in either government agencies or the private sector.
Particular strengths of the program include:
- Students can balance their study load by electing to take from between one and four courses per semester
- Teaching staff are recognised as being world class in their respective fields
- You will study with people from a wide range of countries and professions
- Teaching is conducted in small groups and most classes are held in the evening
- Successful completion of the Graduate Certificate meets the entry requirements for the Graduate Diploma and Masters degrees
- The degrees (Certificate, Diploma, Masters and Advanced Masters) are articulated so that successful completion of one constitutes an element of the next level of qualification.
