Background:

Richard Shapcott’s current Research Interests include: 1) the nature and meaning of moral and political cosmopolitanism, 2) The contribution of philosophical hermeneutics to the normative theory of international relations, 3) The problem of transboundary harms, 4) International ethics in general and the problem presented to western moral theory by radical cultural differences 5) the nature of international relations theory and its relationship to political and social theory and philosophy especially Frankfurt School Critical Theory. He has also published on theoretical debates in international relations relating to cultural difference, cosmopolitanism, the ‘English’ School and Philosophical Hermeneutics. His major contribution has been in the area of normative international relations theory and in particular the contribution of philosophical hermeneutics to cosmopolitan theory. His writings in these areas have been published in leading International Relations journals including Millennium, Global Society, and The British Journal of Politics and International Relations. His most significant Publication with widest impact is “Justice, Community and Dialogue in International Relations” (CUP 2001) in the prestigious Cambridge University Press ‘Studies in International Relations’ series. He is currently writing a critical Introduction to International Ethics’ for Polity Press (UK) (forthcoming 2008). He has also been commissioned to write a new chapter ‘International Ethics’ for the 4th edition of the largest selling international relations textbook in the UK “The Globalisation of World Politics’ (J Baylis, S. Smith and P. Owens, OUP) (125000 copies 3rd edition).
