Background:
Dr Heloise Weber’s main research interests are in the global politics of development/critical development studies and International Political Theory, with strong overlaps with non-mainstream approaches to International Political Economy. She is particularly interested in the relationship between global ‘structures’ and everyday lived experiences. In this context, she has focused on some of the problems and limitations of conventional theoretical approaches in the study of ‘South-North’ relations, including the analytical utility of the concept of the ‘Third World’. Among her published research projects are detailed studies on the following: the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper initiative [PRSPs]; the global politics of microcredit/microfinance schemes; and the WTO (trade) and Development. Her research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as, Review of International Studies, Review of International Political Economy, Third World Quarterly and Globalizations.
Heloise has been invited to contribute to two (peer reviewed) Special Issues on the topics of ‘After the Third World’? (Third World Quarterly, Special 25th Anniversary Issue) and ‘Global Poverty or Global Justice?’ (Globalizations). She is currently working on a co-authored book with Mark T Berger, entitled Rethinking the Third World and a single authored manuscript entitled Organising Poverty, the global politics of microcredit schemes. She was invited to comment on the UN Report on ‘Larger Freedoms’ (section on Freedom from want) as part of the UK Foreign Office –UNA (UK) response (2005). More recently Heloise has been invited to present a keynote address on the ‘global politics of microfinance’ at a seminar organized by the European Association for Comparative Economic Studies, at the University of Pula, Croatia (July 2007).
Heloise Weber has received workshop grants (for international collaborative projects) from the ESRC(UK)/CSGR (2001), International Studies Association (ISA) (2003) and the Toda Peace Research Institute, Hawaii (2005). She has been the Program Chair (& Section Chair) of the Global Development Section of the International Studies Association for 2006-7; She continues as Co-Chair (with Naeem Inyatullah) for 2007-8. Dr Heloise Weber is a Research Associate of the Centre for the Study of Globalisation and Regionalisation (CSGR), UK (
www.csgr.org) and a Centre Associate at the Centre for the Study of Globalisation at Mediterranean College, Greece (
www.csglobalization.org). Heloise Weber is a member of the Editorial Board of Globalizations (2007).
